The League for the Protection of Saharawi Political Prisoners (LPPS) was founded in occupied Western Sahara in 2013 by human rights defenders with personal experience of torture and arbitrary deprivation of liberty.
LPPS documents the situation of Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, from detention to trial and court decisions, calling for better compliance with human rights for political activists at the international level. In a society firmly controlled by the occupying power Morocco, closed off to international media and human rights observers, LPPS plays a vital role in providing information which is then used by international organizations, lawyers, and the UN to hold Morocco accountable. LPPS also offer legal advice to political prisoners and a range of support to their family members who often, as a result of them speaking out about the situation of the detainees, are persecuted and discriminated against by Moroccan authorities.
