Our history

In 2019 we left the international Emmaus movement and changed names from Emmaus Björkå to Björkåfrihet. When we did that we brought the best of our history into the future where our work is needed more than ever. The new name Björkåfrihet reminds us of our roots in the small village of Björkå in the South of Sweden, where it all began in 1965. ”Frihet” is the Swedish word for freedom.

Ever since our organisation was founded, we have collected second hand items. In the beginning, we sent the clothes and textiles to partners around the world. Later on, we sold the items in Sweden and used the surplus to support our partners.

Since the beginning we have supported liberation movements fighting against imperialism, colonialism and occupation, in countries such as Angola, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Palestine and Western Sahara.
